As the refugee crisis in Europe and ongoing Syrian war continues
to dominate news headlines, many countries struggle with conflict and
natural disaster largely out of sight—and largely on their own. Some 60
million people, about 42,500 a day, were displaced in 2015, the largest
upheaval of humanity since World War II.
Below are 20 humanitarian crises that drove mass displacement this year, yet haven’t received much attention from the media:
Afganistan: Decades of chaos
Burundi: Unrest and upheaval
Central African Republic: Gripped by sectarian conflict
Democratic Republic of Congo: Continued politcal instability
Ethiopia: Extreme thirst
Haiti: Struggle to rebuild
Iraq: Recurring tragedy
Libya: Struggling to survive
Mali: Forgotten crisis
Myanmar: Deadly persecution
Nepal: Devastating quake
Niger: Overwhelmed host
Nigeria: Boko Haram terror
Pakistan: Disasters natural and man-made
South Sudan: Edge of mass starvation
Somalia: Legacy of conflict
Sudan: Cycle of violence
Ukraine: Trapped by war
